Let’s get organized!

New year…new space.  I know a lot of people like to do “spring cleaning”, but why wait those extra months and live in chaos?  Start the new year off right and get organized.

1. Ask yourself…what do I not need? Start room by room and cabinet by cabinet. If you aren’t using it or have too many of one thing (like towels), then toss it or take it to a local charity. Haven’t used it in year, then it’s got to go.

toss it

2.  Using the right tools make all the difference. Don’t buy containers or boxes just because they are on sale. If they don’t hold up or aren’t sturdy, then it makes everything look messy and you are back to “non-organization” yet again.

3.  Make it pretty, keep it pretty.  If you add special touches here and there, it makes you think twice before you mess it up.  In your closet, add a large framed picture or mirror on the wall.  The garage is also a great place to add inexpensive art work, shelving or cubbies.

4.  Go vertical.  Many people only thing horizontally, but look at all the room you add if you go tall instead of wide.

5.  Label everything. A place for everything and everything in it’s place. Not only will you be able to instantly locate where something goes, but you will also know when you get low on things.

6.  Think outside the box. If your laundry room is too small for a small trash bin, but you need one, why not hang something on the wall?  A real estate brochure box or an old mail box would work great. Do not limit yourself, solve your organizational problem even if it’s not a traditional fix.

7.  What works for you? You can read these ideas and many more, but the bottom line is,  decide what makes your life easier and go for it!
